<br />
Although I was able to finish four of my fourteen proposed finishes for Q1 (and make some good progress on some others) I'm going to make a short list for Q2. That's because the quarter will really only work out to about a month and a half of sewing time for me. Right now, my sewing room is all packed up in boxes since we close on our new house on April 30 and move on May 4!<br />
<br />
I figure it will take me about a week or two to unpack to the point that I can get anything done, so I'm only proposing the easiest and fastest of finishes. Here goes!<br />
<br />
1. Cape Ann. This top is at the longarmer now and binding is already made and ready to sew on.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCUmesu4KSTOTH6jATP1ZLOtymL7XXmWU-sYFioEHmte35-gB4DCt54qZJea2GlvsRxllkfXEpajefW9g919R6aysrKp94boYd0C6pdZ6U_rv5Y-7PecLCcK7Wr1tx3JkVsWpnc4aNTCBX/s1600/20180218_172052.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCUmesu4KSTOTH6jATP1ZLOtymL7XXmWU-sYFioEHmte35-gB4DCt54qZJea2GlvsRxllkfXEpajefW9g919R6aysrKp94boYd0C6pdZ6U_rv5Y-7PecLCcK7Wr1tx3JkVsWpnc4aNTCBX/s400/20180218_172052.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
This was a photo taken before the borders were added. The design is one of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Nickel-Quilts-Great-Designs-Scraps/dp/1564774163" target="_blank">Pat Speth's Nickel Quilts</a> - I just love the fabric line by <a href="https://oliverands.com/about/fabric/ca/" target="_blank">Oliver & S for Moda</a> even though it's pretty old!<br />
<br />
2. Small Quilt #2 from previous lists.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfybqMbzF7UX5plVc_oSpdGaqp5QPGAAD8QgaTjLMIimm-KmI1BO7KeI6JMQniLOVUx39rl1aejfJf1_yPDKiTGns9DvzMt7dsIUyucUPSw7rXO31q5h75omQtOSQXMaeLRssbX6fWu6w1/s1600/20180109_201838-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1575" data-original-width="1600" height="315" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfybqMbzF7UX5plVc_oSpdGaqp5QPGAAD8QgaTjLMIimm-KmI1BO7KeI6JMQniLOVUx39rl1aejfJf1_yPDKiTGns9DvzMt7dsIUyucUPSw7rXO31q5h75omQtOSQXMaeLRssbX6fWu6w1/s320/20180109_201838-1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
This is partially quilted in the white areas and I need to finish with black and then turn it into a pillow. This is a priority because it's for my son (to go with the extra long twin quilt I made him for his first summer college session, shown below) and he starts as a college freshman in August.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-X7huTPJ2I5JeDK3EqI_mY2mb199tM0w5FduPCc-yTI2Qiuz2AtDGaR_eXR9TFVqOpHTlSAUsQHoWLPgeUnCiFUhyYa1KG0KbjwzHAnlsAs3Rwk9W-wbTcQQXOlSGIwdHSj0fDmYneOdd/s1600/BrodyStar1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1342" data-original-width="1600" height="268" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-X7huTPJ2I5JeDK3EqI_mY2mb199tM0w5FduPCc-yTI2Qiuz2AtDGaR_eXR9TFVqOpHTlSAUsQHoWLPgeUnCiFUhyYa1KG0KbjwzHAnlsAs3Rwk9W-wbTcQQXOlSGIwdHSj0fDmYneOdd/s320/BrodyStar1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
3. The infinity scarf in my school colors. It should be fast when I get around to sewing it so I'm keeping it on this list.<br />
<br />
I made lots of progress on the other items on my 1Q list but I don't think I can realistically finish anything else before the end of June. Look for me to go all out in 3Q though!! <a href="http://dizzyquilts.blogspot.com/2018/04/2018-fal-q2-proposed-finishes.html" target="_blank">Linking up to Dizzy Quilts</a> for anyone else who wants to join this quarter! This pattern was in Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks volume 16 and is called Diamond Wreath. I added jingle bells to the yoyos and will use it as a door hanger next Christmas.<br />

She's been great to work with and gave me a recommendation for the job I got last year and I wanted to say thank you as she has always wanted one of my quilts. This was made from a Moda Layer Cake Mix and Layer Cake from Jen Kingwell's "Behind the Scenes" line for Moda. The solid is Robert Kauffman's Celestial. I did the border from more of the solid and a charm pack. It has an allover longarm pattern.<br />

She loved it and I like the modern layout I went with!<br />

The fleece and fur had been sitting on my shelf for a year or two and the hat pattern was pretty easy. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXUQlBFsKJNYRQHwJ-1tx4hTvWnTkbWN48xGqd0YsBCNZ05lAaMSrvJZ_vazZAzR1EkUu4irW9Mi7QgQ0u1EjxRNTJXY2-S7EcCc1OYgIQJwGacy3sjYXiJoRSpo2fose-hQJMssCBWSSm/s1600/IMG_20180116_081150_309.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXUQlBFsKJNYRQHwJ-1tx4hTvWnTkbWN48xGqd0YsBCNZ05lAaMSrvJZ_vazZAzR1EkUu4irW9Mi7QgQ0u1EjxRNTJXY2-S7EcCc1OYgIQJwGacy3sjYXiJoRSpo2fose-hQJMssCBWSSm/s320/IMG_20180116_081150_309.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Not the bet picture of me, but effective enough. And done in time for the winter weather!<br />

I posted them all on Instagram but here are my formal FAL posts.<br />
<br />
First, my hexie jeans. I patched the second hole with similar but different 1/2" hexies. They were finished in time for the quilt retreat in Lancaster, PA.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvyC8dT01cH-V-2pAZ-cntvOeOa9b7CifiUJNKiN1QwPs-CW7Ypy4uDh_iItnojWaZoEx3o2CVV1QFtNm5axVVUB9VmCX2yRFuv3u9XzWSyCAVocbPQ1HQDcv8VhRXBIRxfwpR-bjpQrXS/s1600/IMG_20180128_164806_052.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="918" data-original-width="918" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvyC8dT01cH-V-2pAZ-cntvOeOa9b7CifiUJNKiN1QwPs-CW7Ypy4uDh_iItnojWaZoEx3o2CVV1QFtNm5axVVUB9VmCX2yRFuv3u9XzWSyCAVocbPQ1HQDcv8VhRXBIRxfwpR-bjpQrXS/s320/IMG_20180128_164806_052.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5Z6aufMSWUl_wLMvAoLIlkcmUS7RnXiFIjEZRPruRZkFDqI_Wrpp4MAxiZzUqcLvnHQNEm84WsOtC74EUFdHc_0buHPXcE9XHekDLxVGfZBTaSn9eB2XggHrh2DZAPFsk3Cc0xr11LHUA/s1600/IMG_20180128_164806_068.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="918" data-original-width="918" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5Z6aufMSWUl_wLMvAoLIlkcmUS7RnXiFIjEZRPruRZkFDqI_Wrpp4MAxiZzUqcLvnHQNEm84WsOtC74EUFdHc_0buHPXcE9XHekDLxVGfZBTaSn9eB2XggHrh2DZAPFsk3Cc0xr11LHUA/s320/IMG_20180128_164806_068.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I patched the hole with fusible interfacing, put together the hexies by hand, appliqued them onto the jeans, and the quilted them.<br />

First quarter ends at the end of March, and Quilt Retreat is the first four days of March so I'm excited to think about what I can get finished by then. Especially if I send some tops to my longarmer because that's where the current backup is.<br />
<br />
So ... let's start with last quarter's list and make some revisions. I want to focus on smaller quilts and tops that I can finish, and larger things that I will send out for quilting.<br />
<br />
#1 - Small Quilt #1 (Diamond Wreath) - since Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Volume 16 was released I can finally publish this photo. The block itself is 12" square, with a 2.5" border.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRVQCqgEart4agfRA1MGvDT1kAqhS9psWyeTevmS0dc8MeCjkymz9oQ1yzGUUVXCp2Iuf-KNA9SzfkA_HDaIunCDBq-xl-kptBu8ef2VZ4cAyjky8cpjCuH0fC_wS18-q2x9_gNgEfWvSX/s1600/20180109_201820-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRVQCqgEart4agfRA1MGvDT1kAqhS9psWyeTevmS0dc8MeCjkymz9oQ1yzGUUVXCp2Iuf-KNA9SzfkA_HDaIunCDBq-xl-kptBu8ef2VZ4cAyjky8cpjCuH0fC_wS18-q2x9_gNgEfWvSX/s320/20180109_201820-1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
#2 - Small Quilt #2 (I can't remember what this block is called but I think it's in Volume 14 of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks). The basic block is also 12" square, with a few narrow borders.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNMZIXDuOAd5_iQSzKymM5WC4gBD-FUVndHmppcxv-fzR2APcjXOPVQG3b3KNyHwdQadoQNwShVhqU98z_C2sARW19p7b_jawJ5pVML6qzIzzw_3vi3_2CD0Gvpdl4hYZfdZElggBhyphenhyphenTXT/s1600/20180109_201838-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1575" data-original-width="1600" height="315" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNMZIXDuOAd5_iQSzKymM5WC4gBD-FUVndHmppcxv-fzR2APcjXOPVQG3b3KNyHwdQadoQNwShVhqU98z_C2sARW19p7b_jawJ5pVML6qzIzzw_3vi3_2CD0Gvpdl4hYZfdZElggBhyphenhyphenTXT/s320/20180109_201838-1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
This will become a pillow to match my son's extra long twin bed quilt with his chosen colors of red, white, black and grey, so I'd like to finish it before he goes off to college in August (still not sure yet where that will be - could be our backyard or it could be another state).<br />
<br />
#3 - Modern Vortex - this was a smallish quilt top, maybe 20" square, that I did in a class at the Blue Hen Quilt Shop a year or two ago and would like to finish into a wall hanging.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

#4 - Soho Chic Cupcake Recipe Charm Top.<br />

#5 - Patriotic Cats top<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1ADXj2EOVQDQpQgmdFRAdXmTgn09o86EtkktKvDK5H9sSDlURCk3PpyL67YH81UqH6qfio2njsI38bWAmXPZ8HXasIOLMDL3elBuFTY9am6UMW8PfEv_cjz_W5xYi3a9ZVdk7CtLyuuaj/s1600/20170819_113212-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1093" data-original-width="1600" height="218" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1ADXj2EOVQDQpQgmdFRAdXmTgn09o86EtkktKvDK5H9sSDlURCk3PpyL67YH81UqH6qfio2njsI38bWAmXPZ8HXasIOLMDL3elBuFTY9am6UMW8PfEv_cjz_W5xYi3a9ZVdk7CtLyuuaj/s320/20170819_113212-1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
#6 - Keep it Sassy! Charm Square top<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAtyUMStJITRUdkBtPryfUbp3L-CbNJT6VoafhV5CvTZEjarviyvcRCcCpEmBz5Ann0MDk9LdOmAh_9SXL7O8kjrplewZxDs_ZTCNV4Pbk-BF4Mtf2sq0_JoN3lZRUS0UGcavs28bgCZ9r/s1600/20170819_113046-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1550" data-original-width="1600" height="310" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAtyUMStJITRUdkBtPryfUbp3L-CbNJT6VoafhV5CvTZEjarviyvcRCcCpEmBz5Ann0MDk9LdOmAh_9SXL7O8kjrplewZxDs_ZTCNV4Pbk-BF4Mtf2sq0_JoN3lZRUS0UGcavs28bgCZ9r/s320/20170819_113046-1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
This is probably the largest of all the projects I plan to quilt myself and the one I'm least likely to finish this quarter.<br />
<br />
#7 - Blue & Grey Cake Mix - I've actually made some progress on this one since it was on the last quarter list. It is a top awaiting its last border and I plan to send it out to be longarmed.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzTjYuTTwTf3xbI-bq2Pf6UXeLMAthU9GaQ4bO_mhp18oYZN0-iCkEQMvjTv4Fv0DMjZEzeQWddexKk0IgNd9OvNdnxBHD9UAx9H1PBsIN6x-Q1TGuiUac5S85P_gV9YCbOe67qQs2M7nv/s1600/20180108_192436.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzTjYuTTwTf3xbI-bq2Pf6UXeLMAthU9GaQ4bO_mhp18oYZN0-iCkEQMvjTv4Fv0DMjZEzeQWddexKk0IgNd9OvNdnxBHD9UAx9H1PBsIN6x-Q1TGuiUac5S85P_gV9YCbOe67qQs2M7nv/s320/20180108_192436.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
I would like to finish this one as it is a gift for my manager at the store who gave me such a great recommendation that I was hired at my full-time employer after applying and interviewing there for three years!!<br />
<br />
#8 - Fleece winter hat. Yes, we're halfway through winter and I still hope to get this one done. It's gold fleece with black faux fur trim.<br />
<br />
There are some things I've taken off the list because they're larger quilts that I want to machine quilt myself and I just will not be working on anything large on the Tiara this quarter. And then there are some new things:<br />
<br />
#9 - Scrappy Blue & White Ocean Waves - this is going to be my Guild Retreat project, so if I have a pieced top once the retreat is over, I'll get it to my longarmer. It will be tight, though.<br />
<br />
#10 - Cape Ann star sashed quilt - this has been a pieced top sitting in a box for years, just waiting for a border and to go to a quilter. So if I get a move on this one, it may also get longarmed and bound.<br />
<br />
#11 - Spanish Stars - this is a collection of star blocks made with Kate Spain's Sunnyside, also sitting in a box waiting to be pieced into a top. I finished the blocks in 2014, as I recall.<br />
<br />
#12 - French Chain - that's <a href="http://www.modabakeshop.com/2015/07/lattice-and-chains-quilt-2.html" target="_blank">this Moda Bake Shop project</a> made with French General's Ville Fleurie jelly rolls. It's a keeper; I hope to use it as the basis to redecorate our bedroom. I just love the reds and tans and plums in this line. Once the top is pieced it will also get longarmed.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8bGBYuumGxftrbU2ARv0bz7SIsl1LEzuCGmKApVgKe_2PhMv6CbUH6zFfwdvfMVAqMxwC6r15l6uZFO15-SiEqTTPzUEBk5sRwQSyJIKMEy9J3jmxCnFXnbUuOUbdfuAOsCp_LEVp_SoJ/s1600/20171007_190126.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8bGBYuumGxftrbU2ARv0bz7SIsl1LEzuCGmKApVgKe_2PhMv6CbUH6zFfwdvfMVAqMxwC6r15l6uZFO15-SiEqTTPzUEBk5sRwQSyJIKMEy9J3jmxCnFXnbUuOUbdfuAOsCp_LEVp_SoJ/s320/20171007_190126.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
#13 - the quickie non-quilt projects seem to be a hit when I want to just FINISH something already, so I've got two more besides my winter hat. One is an infinity scarf made out of cotton quilting fabric in a blue and gold pattern (alma mater colors) I bought from Thousands of Bolts on sale last year, so we'll see how that turns out.<br />
<br />
#14 - the other is a pair of jeans with a hole I want to patch with a 1/2" hexie quilt design. I've already successfully done one area and worn them around fabric/quilty places like quilt guild and the fabric store, and then another hole wore through. So I need to remember how I did the first one and repeat the success for the second. Also preferably before the guild retreat!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhagNPdNFh-QUr6F-srZqZ2uaP6btLI3wWZIENdfj8CLoRyvZ7Csc0Bbrqi1W9yq2bKqcBU7_t4fGC13iXUP3JooHfCuVtYNe679j9opHHhyphenhypheneymKYccNOdJQRCgQEZPhEX-g0_e6p53luMA/s1600/20180109_211114.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhagNPdNFh-QUr6F-srZqZ2uaP6btLI3wWZIENdfj8CLoRyvZ7Csc0Bbrqi1W9yq2bKqcBU7_t4fGC13iXUP3JooHfCuVtYNe679j9opHHhyphenhypheneymKYccNOdJQRCgQEZPhEX-g0_e6p53luMA/s320/20180109_211114.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
So that's about it - thirteen projects was lucky for last quarter; maybe 14 will be as lucky for this one. It's fun to have the motivation and see who's posting on Instagram with the hashtag when I need a little nudge to get to my sewing machine. <br />

Two table runners that had been sitting in my stash for years, since I remember buying them when I lived in Virginia at a store that has moved and closed since then.<br />

Did I get around to using them this year? Of course not! But they were easy to make and I saved the instructions for the next time.Kristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04581476970515697880noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4652438576132828848.post-82727392508946804332018-01-04T11:37:00.001-05:002018-01-04T11:39:51.824-05:00Finish number twoHere I am playing catch up on my finishes list. I finished and Instagrammed the pics of this tote bag, which was #11 on my <a href="http://tenquilts.blogspot.com/2017/10/fal-for-fourth-quarter-2017.html" target="_blank">4QFAL list</a>, on October 29. Here it is for Blogger:<br />

I've been using the tote bag since it was finished since it has such pretty fall colors in it and it's gotten many compliments from my office mates.Kristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04581476970515697880noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4652438576132828848.post-42287874974189800342017-10-12T15:16:00.002-04:002018-01-04T11:33:42.157-05:00finally, a finishI promised that I would have a fast finish on my <a href="http://tenquilts.blogspot.com/2017/10/fal-for-fourth-quarter-2017.html" target="_blank">Q4QAL list</a> and I do. I bound the mini finally and it is complete:<br />
<br />
This pattern is so old that there aren't even any pictures on the <a href="http://www.modabakeshop.com/2009/09/1800s-vintage-quilt.html" target="_blank">Moda Bake Shop post</a> where I got it. It was designed by Sheryl Johnson of <a href="http://www.temeculaquiltco.com/patterns.html" target="_blank">Temecula Quilt Co</a>. and there is a photo on their website as part of a collection of small quilt patterns available for purchase:<br />

And here is mine:<br />

<br />
Sigh.<br />
<br />
I thought I would get one done in time - the easiest one of all - but I had no time to sew on Saturday so it will be a 4th quarter finish. At least I'm starting out a new quarter with one in the bag, right?<br />
<br />
I'm going to try a new tactic and put a few things on my list that are also gimme projects. After all, Christmas is coming and I'll need to finish one or two things if I want to gift them, right?<br />
<br />
So here is my updated and revised Finish-A-Long list, the longest yet:<br />
<br />
#1 - Candy Bar table topper - this will be my first finish<br />
#2 & #3 - small quilts from 100 Blocks Volume 15 test blocks<br />
#4 - Slide Show quilt (batiks) - this has been sitting on my midarm for months now<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

#9 - Moda Layer Cake Mix recipe, Kaufman celestial blue with Jen Kingswell's Behind the Scenes<br />
#10 - my One Block Wonder from the class I took in April. This is now a completed top, at least I made progress on it last quarter.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~let's keep going!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
#11 - a Downton Abbey tote bag I started last year at the same time as two others which have since been finished. I intended to keep this one for myself which is why the others were finished but not this one.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
#12 - a fleece winter hat with faux fur trim. Preferably before winter fully arrives. Have the fabric (gold fleece with black fur trim) and pattern, but again, it's for me, so it hasn't been prioritized.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
#13 - Christmas decor! I have a matching pair of kitted table runners - one says 5 minutes, the other says 15 minutes ... so why have they sat in my pile to sew for five or more years??</div>
<br />
<br />
Okay, some say 13 is an unlucky number, but it can't be unluckier than I've had so far since I've finished nothing in Q2 or Q3. So my mission is to make 13 a lucky number! Kristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04581476970515697880noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4652438576132828848.post-65457406708748888772017-08-19T14:31:00.000-04:002017-08-19T14:31:56.610-04:00Charmed! Demonstration<span style="font-family: inherit;">The Ladybug Quilt Guild's Diamond State Quilt Show was this past weekend and I did my demo about using 5" charm squares ... but I upped my own ante and ran through TEN ways to use charm squares without books or patterns. I did not do a handout, but promised a post here for anyone who wanted the details to come check it out. So here it is:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">1. Divided Nine-Patch - The divided nine-patch technique involves sewing nine charm squares into a grid, and then slicing midway down the outside rows (2 1/2" from the unfinished edges). Insert a 1 1/2" strip in the open seam and sew back together. Do sides first, then top & bottom.</span><br />
<div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: -.25pt;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjg9YvnDp6HId-ZUQKMicxZIPVLNfb1lklUF8VjD-ijXFTKSIgzsvqXNc-RN-6TVRUt0Xq2v2zCS3mohU0nbyuFXk5kpiiyRITkxKnOp3moC7ykTPEKIKze5QhLLd8cDAVJrlJuSKtZBf0t/s1600/Charmed1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" data-original-height="229" data-original-width="722" height="126" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjg9YvnDp6HId-ZUQKMicxZIPVLNfb1lklUF8VjD-ijXFTKSIgzsvqXNc-RN-6TVRUt0Xq2v2zCS3mohU0nbyuFXk5kpiiyRITkxKnOp3moC7ykTPEKIKze5QhLLd8cDAVJrlJuSKtZBf0t/s400/Charmed1.jpg" width="400" /></span></a><span style="font-family: inherit;">This can also be done with a coordinating Honey Bun in the same fabric line as the charm squares for a scrappier look. For a tutorial, check out <a href="http://www.modabakeshop.com/2010/02/off-the-grid-sliced-nine-patch-quilt.html" target="_blank">John Adams’ (aka QuiltDad) “Off the Grid" quilt at Moda Bake shop</a>.</span></div>
</div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">2. Disappearing Four-Patch. This technique technique requires two sets of charms, dark and light, sewn opposite each other. Then make four slices, each one inch on either side of each seam. Flip each RECTANGULAR piece 180°, leaving all five squares where they are. Sew back together. If you press consistently, nesting seams makes this a very easy block!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBJZyUUSeCBz1qFN2uPAQmW5GbB3aFn3ugOD_RnhiQUM2Zq0La6fjtTNPI9Venj21dhVNvtjarKHEQ_8or4Y6B82BGJg3P1KFT3EEPQTfH7eDjbTyrvf7UIU38sabK60ekrQhMeS7bZQhE/s1600/Charmed2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="257" data-original-width="777" height="209" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBJZyUUSeCBz1qFN2uPAQmW5GbB3aFn3ugOD_RnhiQUM2Zq0La6fjtTNPI9Venj21dhVNvtjarKHEQ_8or4Y6B82BGJg3P1KFT3EEPQTfH7eDjbTyrvf7UIU38sabK60ekrQhMeS7bZQhE/s640/Charmed2.jpg" width="640" /></a></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Here is a top I made of one each charm pack of Spring House and Bella Solid in Baby Yellow, but I cut two inches in from each seam rather than one for a slightly different look:</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0qQUawnHUIgmVGmDWSEO5EwaGv-RR6rEJxp83VDGRkVnUNpgZFrHGak45SoBbsmm67UR_HgbKH87V8MB-g15RfPuD36acV918mezG0lIOHnEaN7-quRKvEb8nBFU7hltFSjP7n_ZE4tMj/s1600/20170819_133811-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1337" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0qQUawnHUIgmVGmDWSEO5EwaGv-RR6rEJxp83VDGRkVnUNpgZFrHGak45SoBbsmm67UR_HgbKH87V8MB-g15RfPuD36acV918mezG0lIOHnEaN7-quRKvEb8nBFU7hltFSjP7n_ZE4tMj/s320/20170819_133811-1.jpg" width="267" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">3. Templates. Templates are a great way of using a charm pack
without having any real purpose to it.
If you have an <a href="http://www.accuquilt.com/" target="_blank">Accuquilt </a>Go! Cutter you have a whole array of templates
to fit your 5” charm squares. If not,
you can make them from template plastic or order them - I like the metal ones from <a href="http://www.ardcotemplates.com/" target="_blank">Ardco </a>which include a nonslide surface so they grip the fabric. Hexagons, Drunkard’s Paths, Applecores, or appliqué shapes like hearts
are all great to cut and sew from charm squares.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: 103%;"> </span>However, you don’t want to waste your corners! Try using <a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2011/03/those-bonus-triangles.html" target="_blank">Bonnie Hunter’s bonus triangles technique</a> to turn them into halfsquare triangle units! You’ll need a business card (they usually
measure 2” x 3” and are of good firm cardstock) trimmed to 2” square and then
halved diagonally. As shown top center,
lay it on the corner, trace a line along the edge, and sew along the line. The distance between the seams will be
approximately 3/8” so cut between them carefully, splitting the
difference. Press the unit, and repeat
on the other side. This method will
yield two flying geese units and four 2”
(unfinished) HST units per charm for a border or another project. </span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">7. Cupcake mixes and paper piecing. Have you seen the new <a href="http://blog.modafabrics.com/cakemix" target="_blank">Cupcake Mixes</a> by Miss Rosie for Moda? It involves sewing a piece of paper onto a pair of charms, sewing along dotted lines and cutting along solid lines. It is a great way to turn charms into miniature quilts. Similar papers are available from Spinning Star designs (Sew Mod has a great tutorial on using them <a href="https://sewmod.wordpress.com/2015/04/22/making-perfect-half-square-triangles/" target="_blank">here</a>) or make your own following <a href="http://www.quiltingandwhatnot.ca/Half-Square-Triangle.html" target="_blank">Quilting and Whatnot's</a> ideas. I made the top below with the Spinning Star design paper for half square trianges and got eight out of a pair of charms.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">8. Slash. This technique comes to us courtesy of <a href="http://bittybitsandpieces.blogspot.com/2008/11/charm-pack-quilt-tutorial.html" target="_blank">Kim Walus at Bitty Bits and Pieces</a> (although she calls it RaeAnn's Charm Pack Quilt, "Slash" fit on my short talking notes and made me remember what the technique was!). It involves slashing a charm in half diagonally and sewing it back together with a 10" long 1.5" strip between them. The link to her page above gives a great tutorial. I made this quilt top with a Metropolitan Fair charm pack and a yard of Bella Solid in Burgundy.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I'd love to play around with this some more, like using scrappy strips to "slash" with, sewing different halves of charms together, or even cutting the finished square in half a different way to rearrange even differently. So many of these methods can be mixed and matched for a variety of results!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">9. Shadow. This is a great technique from <a href="http://twiggyandopal.blogspot.com/2015/07/shadow-block-charm-pack-tutorial.html" target="_blank">Jayne at Twiggy and Opal</a>, and works wonderfully for a modern quilt, like her tutorial shows, or when you just don't want to cut up those charms. It also makes a larger quilt, not only because there are fewer seams, but because you use two coordinating fabrics, one for the "shadow" and one for the background. My top below is made with Legacy, along with Bella Solids in Hometown Sky (shadow) and Ivory (background).</span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">10. Keep your eyes open! Chances are you already have patterns for using 5" charm squares in magazines and books. Loyal readers of my blog know I love the Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks issues, and each time I get a new one, I go through and note which designs lend themselves well to charm squares, jelly rolls and honey buns. There are also great free resources online like <a href="http://www.modabakeshop.com/category/charm-pack" target="_blank">Moda Bake Shop</a> and <a href="http://www.quilterscache.com/QuiltBlocksGalore.html" target="_blank">Quilter's Cache</a> - when I find a new pattern for Charm Squares, I save it in my favorites in a folder called "Precut pattern" and add the word "Charm" to the end of it so I can pull it up quickly later when looking for a project.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Finally, if you have a friend (or six!) who wants to amass their stash as much as you do, start with fat quarters and cut them down into common precut sizes. This is a great guide for doing so!</span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">This should give you enough ideas to dive into your stash and start sewing! Enjoy!</span></div>
And I did not select all and copy just in case like I often do with posts in forms.<br />
<br />
If you've been visiting here looking for that material, please hang tight ... I'm working on recreating it. Grudgingly. Thanks for your patience!!Kristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04581476970515697880noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4652438576132828848.post-41951596423337130962017-07-31T16:28:00.001-04:002017-07-31T16:28:54.868-04:00Lots of sewing, little progressDoes it ever feel like life is just a series of "when this, then that" statements?<br />
<br />
I keep thinking, "I'll have more time to finish this sewing project when the quilt show is over" or "after I'm done block testing for Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks issue, I can get back to work on this quilt for me."<br />
<br />
It's one-day-at-a-time progress, isn't it? I keep "to do" boards going so I don't forget projects which have just been put away for a while, but I always have a short list in my head of what I want most to get back to work on.<br />
<br />
I revamped my "Charmed!" demonstration and added five MORE ways to work with five-inch charm squares to present at the Ladybug Quilt Guild's show in a few weeks. (For more information about the show, please <a href="http://ladybugquiltguild.weebly.com/quilt-show.html" target="_blank">visit our website</a> - my demo is on Saturday afternoon.) I've been busy sewing up samples for the show-and-tell part of the demo, not only for the new bits, but also because I keep giving away the quilts I've made previously! So once that's through on August 11, those quilts can go away for a while and other projects can come back out. Maybe even get some finishes for the Third Quarter Finish-A-Long!<br />
<br />
I've also been (happily) sidetracked by Jessica's <a href="http://www.imgrum.org/tag/bluerkblocks" target="_blank">#bluerkblocks project</a> going on at Instagram. Jessica, a busy police officer and quilter, began this project to make quilts for fallen police officers' families and the response has been wonderful. She's just hit 1,000 blocks and is going stronger than ever! Although her @craftycop account is private she adds upon request, and instructions for making the 12.5" (unfinished) blocks are at <a href="http://heritage-threads.com/2016/09/09/12-raspberry-kiss-block/">http://heritage-threads.com/2016/09/09/12-raspberry-kiss-block/</a> - center X in blue, outer fabrics in low to medium volume neutrals so that the blue pops. I've sent her a batch already but try to cut and set aside fabrics here and there so that I can whip up some more in between demo samples. Since I live right down the road from the Wawa convenience store where a Delaware State Trooper was shot and killed the day I interviewed for my new job, this project has hit home for me.<br />
<br />
My Honey has a business trip in the near future, though, so that means lots of nights sewing without distraction. I should be able to get my "must dos" out of the way and get back to work on my "want to dos"! That means posts with pictures!Kristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04581476970515697880noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4652438576132828848.post-10427332090444910542017-07-02T17:42:00.001-04:002017-07-02T17:46:11.126-04:00I'm a FAiLure, but trying again for 3QI had such high hopes for the Finish-A-Long for second quarter. As it turns out, I didn't finish a darn thing on my list. <br />
<br />
On the bright side, I did finally land a full-time benefitted job at my employer of choice, after five years of underemployment and three years of applying there! So yay! As excuses go, that might be a pretty good one. I also became a published quilt block designer during 2Q, so there's that too.<br />
<br />
But as for quilting, I got some things basted and ready for quilting, but nothing, not even the mini that only needed binding, finished. (Although I *DID* buy the fabric to bind it!)<br />
<br />
So the first part of my 3QFAL is the first part of <a href="http://tenquilts.blogspot.com/2017/04/second-quarter-finish-long-list.html" target="_blank">2Q</a>:<br />
<br />
#1 - Candy Bar table topper<br />
#2 & #3 - small quilts from 100 Blocks Volume 15 test blocks<br />
#4 - Slide Show quilt (batiks)<br />
#5 - Modern Vortex<br />
#6 - silk Curvalicious runner<br />
#7 - Windows Into My World<br />
<br />
Now to add a few new things. Our <a href="http://ladybugquiltguild.weebly.com/quilt-show.html" target="_blank">quilt show</a> is in August and I'm teaching a demo on Saturday. I did not have it all together in time to submit any of my quilts for showing - I've learned the hard way that if it isn't finished by the time the form is due, don't try to enter it! - but I do want to finish at least a TOP of charm techniques that I don't have done yet. I keep gifting all my quilts I make for this demo, and then I'm asked to teach the demo again and don't have any quilts for the show & tell!<br />
So to continue ... #8 - charm square top<br />
#9 - my Moda Layer Cake Mix recipe<br />
But since I only had three total entries for my giveaways, I'll give everyone who commented a free issue of Volume 15! The catch is that I need to figure out who all my commenters are. I'm guessing my old neighbor Tammy is number one, and I know guild friend Daria is two ... but number three will have to send me an email or Facebook message. As for the apron ...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: 12.8px;">I'm so excited to share my very first published quilt block design (even if only a handful of people out there read this!). I've been testing for Quiltmaker Magazine's 100 Blocks issues off and on for some time; Volume 15 was my third for which I was a tester. About halfway through testing I received an invitation to contribute a design, and, inspired by the latest collection by one of my favorite designers - "Brighten Up!" by Me & My Sister - I worked up Paper Doll Dress.</span></div>
<div>
<div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg104hemxGyVTG53d8GH7M5mCv1AYf-FFMujr5xxFjMyPCVfdVcaef2MsADBsidL8XWRyqN4V9iOt5i-S4AXfxve1ZvT9AeLOEpeynv-M0fSn_rx6pDgI3yT0Oc86hnAjNPuFn17FpIXXoV/s1600/20170501_212244-1+%25281%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="font-size: 12.8px; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg104hemxGyVTG53d8GH7M5mCv1AYf-FFMujr5xxFjMyPCVfdVcaef2MsADBsidL8XWRyqN4V9iOt5i-S4AXfxve1ZvT9AeLOEpeynv-M0fSn_rx6pDgI3yT0Oc86hnAjNPuFn17FpIXXoV/s320/20170501_212244-1+%25281%2529.jpg" width="318" /></a></div>
This was inspired by the vintage paper dolls I used to play with as a kid and still strike me nostalgically when I see online. I love that Vogue used to create paper dolls and dresses to match their season's offerings!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglgG0U-2JqZmlLq9ehwSVN4_sWCzag1BxOM_KQwL3dRTXGv7rocni-r0e2NA41PgKI4zdyX4Kv25-Rsc-caqbpX81xKNfEyDcoEo422mJ-yfpw1oRT5zW_IpWtjjuhDRqm-mHzRm2lF2Gx/s1600/paperdolls3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="font-size: 12.8px; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglgG0U-2JqZmlLq9ehwSVN4_sWCzag1BxOM_KQwL3dRTXGv7rocni-r0e2NA41PgKI4zdyX4Kv25-Rsc-caqbpX81xKNfEyDcoEo422mJ-yfpw1oRT5zW_IpWtjjuhDRqm-mHzRm2lF2Gx/s320/paperdolls3.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
</div>
I originally worked this up two ways: one was done by hand applique with freezer paper templates, and the other as fusible. I put the two options to my family for voting and the fusible version is what was sent to Quiltmaker. However, this is the hand applique version here:</div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaT5ZxFFL4AFRJkcOXj_VHv2XGFXmdD-q6Wo-Kc3MCHLmWMpwRID1z7L2zZwlkMEyioXM9Ag2WFvv7QX_ejLB8kNpoC1xv-b4_P1XV4pU79BKzczifmWiN0w0cSp06pHoVAaNShirWQxbD/s1600/20170502_192759-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="font-size: 12.8px; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaT5ZxFFL4AFRJkcOXj_VHv2XGFXmdD-q6Wo-Kc3MCHLmWMpwRID1z7L2zZwlkMEyioXM9Ag2WFvv7QX_ejLB8kNpoC1xv-b4_P1XV4pU79BKzczifmWiN0w0cSp06pHoVAaNShirWQxbD/s320/20170502_192759-1.jpg" width="304" /></a></div>
I used 3/8" white satin ribbon for the "tabs" to the dress and found that, with the hand applique, it was easiest to machine stitch these down onto the background before sewing on the dress templates. With the fusible version, I could just place them under when fusing, but did want to quickly blanket stitch the appliques after fusing so nothing went askew! The rickrack trim just pulled it all together in such a cute way, and, with the ribbon tabs, helped give the block more of a three-dimensional feel.<br />
<br /></div>
I had the idea of morphing this into a child's play quilt by creating a cardboard or fabric doll body, and then making the appliques double sided and removable from the quilt with velcro, but I haven't gotten quite that far yet. I'm still noodling the idea around and talking with people more artistic than me to create the doll image!<br />
<br /></div>
Sadly, as I mentioned earlier this week, I did not see the blog tour email from Quiltmaker in time to participate, so this blog post may have few to no views. But if you are one of the few who already follows me or managed to come here from a link somewhere, I'm giving away this adorable apron from Quiltmaker which features images of all 100 blocks in Volume 15! </div>
It's finally time for Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Volume 15 Blog Tour! This issue's tour theme is "Block Tour Road Rally" ... which is perfect, because since I did not see the invitation to participate formally in time, this is something of a detour!<br />
<br />
The main event is happening at <a href="http://www.quiltmaker.com/blogs/quiltypleasures" target="_blank">Quilty Pleasures</a> all week, and I'm as excited as anyone else to see what's in store ... I hear that some of the posts will include some of the block testers' designs so I may see my own handiwork featured there! <br />
<br />
I will be posting later this week about my own block design which was included in this issue, but the good stuff is that I'm also participating in the giveaway. I'll be giving away five copies of Volume 15 to lucky winners, as well as a bonus prize which will be offered on my block post. To enter to win one of five issues of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks, Volume 15, leave a comment on THIS POST telling me about your favorite type of block assembly. Do you like fusible applique? Foundation paper piecing? English paper piecing? As you know if you have previous volumes of the magazine, it's divided up into pieced, applique and mixed techniques (and my block falls into the third category). I'm noodling around ideas for a future block design so I'm curious to hear what you love!<br />
<br />
The bonus to my missing the opportunity to formally participate in the block tour means you probably have a better chance of winning here ... heck, I may not even get five comments to be able to give away issues, so I will leave the giveaway open until Friday, May 5 at midnight EDT for entries. Just be sure that you choose a commenting identity which is linked to an email address so that I can let you know if you're a winner! It was a great way to see how other quilters do all the same things you do, from labels to bindings to stash building. I'm looking forward to seeing what Amy has up her sleeve next!<br />
<br />
I've also seen a lot posted about <a href="http://www.olfa.com/45mm-endurance-rotary-blade-pack-of-1-%28rb45h-1%29/1128127.html" target="_blank">Olfa's new Endurance Blade</a> lately, so I had to pick one up.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFTSWFJlMxqW2b-3uh-ZpxteRF0_n6SigdBOJGd6_ECUOgyk8Qww0zHtNqqTte8lg8i01X2dXlBmn7mVm5y6Ow351gBRdlIms875cIst_UkABusTWY_PGjUothKGsZYvVnyKNQPzVPiAg_/s1600/olfa.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFTSWFJlMxqW2b-3uh-ZpxteRF0_n6SigdBOJGd6_ECUOgyk8Qww0zHtNqqTte8lg8i01X2dXlBmn7mVm5y6Ow351gBRdlIms875cIst_UkABusTWY_PGjUothKGsZYvVnyKNQPzVPiAg_/s320/olfa.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
Jo-Ann Fabrics does have them in stock (at least my store does) and since rotary tools were all 40% off when I bought it (plus a 20% off coupon which is the same as my employee discount) you could get one for only $6.24 the day I bought it. I confess, I'm not big on changing my rotary blade often; I just become accustomed to its poorer performance and really only change it when a nick means it always skips cutting at a certain rotation. But I had a new project in mind and thought a fresh blade would make a big difference, so I splurged. The proof is in the duration, so I'll post again with time!<br />
<br />
My project involves trying out <a href="http://blog.modafabrics.com/cakemix/" target="_blank">Moda's Cake Mix Recipes</a>. I love precuts, but I never bought a layer cake before. I like charm packs for small things and jelly rolls and honey buns for strips, and fat eighth or fat quarter bundles if I wanted larger cuts, but a layer cake seemed limiting. Maybe I'm exactly the type of quilter these were invented for? So I picked up a layer cake of <a href="http://jenkingwelldesigns.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Jen Kingwell'</a>s "Behind the Scenes" from <a href="http://www.greenfairyquilts.com/" target="_blank">Green Fairy Quilts</a>, and four yards of <a href="http://www.robertkaufman.com/fabrics/kona_cotton/" target="_blank">Kona Cotton</a> in Celestial, and set to work with Cake Mix #2 which I'd ordered from <a href="https://www.missouriquiltco.com/" target="_blank">Missouri Star Quilt Company</a>.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgERyHto5zz4K89krU2vSihOvnnjFC_Ni5A4edVvstSPcRMXCQsGPxhz0aMd_kO-BymcYyUTJ1-2pUvAQfIqbxib_ate85aJeMu_d5UFQHGKvxNzheQZrL-BDGygVPMfXQse22eM5fPjoCo/s1600/20170325_140928.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgERyHto5zz4K89krU2vSihOvnnjFC_Ni5A4edVvstSPcRMXCQsGPxhz0aMd_kO-BymcYyUTJ1-2pUvAQfIqbxib_ate85aJeMu_d5UFQHGKvxNzheQZrL-BDGygVPMfXQse22eM5fPjoCo/s400/20170325_140928.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
This is easy and fast - just like using a cake mix is easier and faster than baking from scratch! Layering the squares with the paper takes seconds.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3LtOA0_EoKYxkJeBxm94OV2t-CQpqdREj29Lmw4_FeX3iIc4MvOtE_MKjV0-aqujS5MOzBdKzYbzj9dWBreSrMR8UEBS80MxYTQ6NUB6t3XKf01UZDMuZhv2Dk_A9MKJwVJGxANu4WVH8/s1600/20170326_150923.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="295" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3LtOA0_EoKYxkJeBxm94OV2t-CQpqdREj29Lmw4_FeX3iIc4MvOtE_MKjV0-aqujS5MOzBdKzYbzj9dWBreSrMR8UEBS80MxYTQ6NUB6t3XKf01UZDMuZhv2Dk_A9MKJwVJGxANu4WVH8/s320/20170326_150923.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Sewing one of them takes me less than three minutes. The advantage to these long straight lines is that I could put the pedal to the metal and zoom over these straight lines. (Side note - I need to look into getting a foam pad of some sort because my whole sewing table vibrates when I sew that fast!)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBrmXQvyuc2TceAa-AiwBhoFWaobX-B_RXjbbvmD7i5lubsUmIUw_NbT6PhjKXT0aY7Tnpg9M8cDPowuFwHRcNDM0tbL4J2RZ8PRzEIevIPZRwUq-B5KCuv_q750h1gckvAXUUD0Omytk4/s1600/20170326_160757.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="221" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBrmXQvyuc2TceAa-AiwBhoFWaobX-B_RXjbbvmD7i5lubsUmIUw_NbT6PhjKXT0aY7Tnpg9M8cDPowuFwHRcNDM0tbL4J2RZ8PRzEIevIPZRwUq-B5KCuv_q750h1gckvAXUUD0Omytk4/s320/20170326_160757.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Then it's slice, press, and pull off paper to yield a dozen HSTs to rearrange into any of a number of block settings. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVdlzERA5RZNeutTXuOiA2TmxGcf-09bT3HxVKbcPkEBwI95PsEIQFRE-WCfeGn3Ra9TCVVwAOQv_Dt21y2-QyhbKV1HQRbjQlx37ZX-jCroYjlvK1f6-cENWBZIMlEoEVlOx1TWDLVDeR/s1600/20170326_192733.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVdlzERA5RZNeutTXuOiA2TmxGcf-09bT3HxVKbcPkEBwI95PsEIQFRE-WCfeGn3Ra9TCVVwAOQv_Dt21y2-QyhbKV1HQRbjQlx37ZX-jCroYjlvK1f6-cENWBZIMlEoEVlOx1TWDLVDeR/s320/20170326_192733.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's the one I've chosen! I may switch it up from the block design to a streak-of-lightening/chevron design when I put these four blocks together in the end.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyRm-HedeRP-0btfF4z_H1zMIc4BK_3U48ztiuXY0UqDhxM8U8PRMZky4mtEEqane4N37fv2HIJtME8_r-r_BNEDUH2X-As7wh023irCZTIA88Di1a5vOHFrEPFR52woUQZqcEwufaB1Vn/s1600/2017-04-13+16.38.22.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="306" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyRm-HedeRP-0btfF4z_H1zMIc4BK_3U48ztiuXY0UqDhxM8U8PRMZky4mtEEqane4N37fv2HIJtME8_r-r_BNEDUH2X-As7wh023irCZTIA88Di1a5vOHFrEPFR52woUQZqcEwufaB1Vn/s320/2017-04-13+16.38.22.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
My only challenge is working with pins ... I'm not a quilter who uses them often and I keep poking myself! But it's a small price to pay for speed, accuracy and convenience!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After I cut all of these with my Olfa Endurance Blade I enrolled a course in the One Block Wonder quilt, which is essentially turning a gorgeous piece of fabric into kaleidoscope blocks. It was a fun day of cutting and sewing at the <a href="http://www.bluehenquiltshop.com/" target="_blank">Blue Hen Quilt Shop</a>, and I'm looking forward to returning in a few weeks with all my completed half-hexie blocks to lay it out and put it all together! (Repeat pics from my Instagram feed here, sorry!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
I must add that the instructions/supply list for the class told me to bring multiple rotary blades since I would be cutting through six layers of fabric and it would be tough. Well, this is where I thought I'd put Olfa to the test - I'd just cut an entire cake mix recipe with paper and fabric so I brought ONLY my rotary cutter with the Olfa Endurance Blade. No problem! Sliced through all six layers on the first time, every cut. Gotta love it! When it's finally time to replace it, you can bet I'll be buying another one.<br />
<br />
Finally, my last big exciting bit of news almost deserves its own post. I just got my preview copies of Quiltmaker Magazine's 100 Blocks Volume 15, and not only was I a happy tester for the issue, but I am the proud AUTHOR of Block # 1435! Tune in to <a href="http://www.quiltmaker.com/blogs/quiltypleasures/" target="_blank">Quilty Pleasures</a> for the blog tour May 1-5, 2017. I'll also be showcasing my block here then, and giving away issues to a few lucky winners. Testing for Volume 16 begins next month also, and I'm looking forward to being the first to test those ... maybe I'll come up with a design to submit for Volume 16 as well!Kristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04581476970515697880noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4652438576132828848.post-50468366908492347592017-04-04T16:45:00.002-04:002017-04-04T16:45:26.343-04:00Second Quarter Finish-A-Long listI found out about the Finish-A-Long midway about a month ago, too late to participate in the first quarter's prizes since I hadn't submitted a list of proposed finishes. But now it's time to start the second quarter and here is my list of proposed finishes!<br />
<br />
The easy one - I have a little table topper made from a Moda Bake Shop recipe using a candy bar, which has been quilted for years and I'm only dragging my feet on the binding. I don't know why; I actually like binding, so that's going to be first.<br />
<br />
The quilt guild is looking for a few small quilt donations for the August show, so I plan to finish a couple of my Quiltmaker 100 Blocks test blocks into small quilts. I can't share pics of them yet since they haven't been published (volume 15) but one is an English paper pieced wreath and one is a two-color foundation paper pieced design. They'll need borders, quilting and binding to count as finishes.<br />
<br />
Also a guild show-related project, another member had made a quilt top and didn't feel up to finishing it. I volunteered to take it on in order to get it quilted and donate it back to the guild. I need to baste and quilt and finish that one.<br />
<br />
There are two more that I don't know whether will make it into this quarter's finishes or not - my lime and navy Modern Vortex small quilt from last year's Debby Kratovil workshop, and my silk Curvalicious quilt runner from last year's Cheryl Lynch workshop.<br />
<br />
My long reach is to finish my Windows into my World quilt (Geta Grama design_ - the EPP is done, now I have to applique it to the background fabric, baste quilt and bind.<br />
<br />
Wow, there's a lot of basting, quilting and binding on my plate this spring! To recap:<br />
#1 - Candy Bar table topper<br />
#2 & #3 - small quilts from 100 Blocks Volume 15 test blocks<br />
#4 - Slide Show quilt (batiks)<br />
#5 - Modern Vortex<br />
#6 - silk Curvalicious runner<br />
#7 - Windows Into My World<br />
<br />
Here's hoping I finish them all!!Kristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04581476970515697880noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4652438576132828848.post-22882303322109651962017-03-12T15:30:00.002-04:002017-03-12T15:30:17.605-04:00March and hopeful for Stella!Yesterday morning I awoke from a nightmare around 4 am - I'd gone away for the weekend and someone had broken into my home and stolen all my electronics, even my KitchenAid appliances. But once I determined that my quilts and fabric stash were untouched, I felt very lucky!<br />
<br />
March is here, we have hopes for a big blizzard this week thanks to Winter Storm Stella (which means staying home to sew time), and testing for Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Volume 15 is complete. Quiltmaker sent me a gorgeous package as way of thanks and I've already volunteered for Volume 16!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS4Zrfl8JKhgskDnPm5otvAMacrD3pXfD7dGnlCJl-k2yG6FuLOQZ7QMKQleqtDRr26WlGiK52iasFVfPG8DBJ4OuO-z5ER2yLoUEY_19A4boX8jzzWZGOnViv8M5KZv-gfh_G_VQ7hCkJ/s1600/20170308_205420.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS4Zrfl8JKhgskDnPm5otvAMacrD3pXfD7dGnlCJl-k2yG6FuLOQZ7QMKQleqtDRr26WlGiK52iasFVfPG8DBJ4OuO-z5ER2yLoUEY_19A4boX8jzzWZGOnViv8M5KZv-gfh_G_VQ7hCkJ/s320/20170308_205420.jpg" width="286" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
It took me a couple of weeks to sort through my stash of scraps to continue work on the Fiesta Tiles block, but I finally did it. My bin of bits is manageable again, even though my Honey thought it was the end of the world since I was throwing out fabric. Here are a few of the pieces I came across, wondering why on earth I kept bits so darn small!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLd3-D6SSsfrHn3aU9lXc0ERF7iYhlJTKQIiEbYEUUAh2wr54MZGw8-blCnJyxmkivT8A31tiUgZBZWOcxE0FvB6SBtzvTegLrSkRG7l3L9JC9A4WFO6QKrD_lX9AZorvCASM6sKWWbQyj/s1600/20170311_130458.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="282" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLd3-D6SSsfrHn3aU9lXc0ERF7iYhlJTKQIiEbYEUUAh2wr54MZGw8-blCnJyxmkivT8A31tiUgZBZWOcxE0FvB6SBtzvTegLrSkRG7l3L9JC9A4WFO6QKrD_lX9AZorvCASM6sKWWbQyj/s320/20170311_130458.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I've got quite a few blocks mostly made but will still need to make a bunch more. This is turning into a celebration quilt looking back on my 25 years of quilting, as I'm finding bits of pretty much every quilt I've ever made (including a lot I never even caught in photographs).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxZK3gKiELC-Zt3iYLl40ZFH_cUWsOQuqHPuz9To61UTTin7Svwe3jDLH9oUwwrtVclW8-aY7RrWyW71rc-J1DS1Dhrhq4E_VRl8JDkZsNCxobotYHumN79-P8MYXR0fwPyHamm19LikEk/s1600/20170311_130525.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="192" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxZK3gKiELC-Zt3iYLl40ZFH_cUWsOQuqHPuz9To61UTTin7Svwe3jDLH9oUwwrtVclW8-aY7RrWyW71rc-J1DS1Dhrhq4E_VRl8JDkZsNCxobotYHumN79-P8MYXR0fwPyHamm19LikEk/s320/20170311_130525.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I've been pulling on my math skills to strip piece the black and white segments with the help of Janet Kime's Border Workbook. It's easier than following the individual cutting instructions for one block in the magazine:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have a few other things going on as well, including some machine quilting and hand piecing. I'll post more soon.Kristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04581476970515697880noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4652438576132828848.post-8002092544189852332017-01-28T11:49:00.002-05:002017-01-28T11:49:30.851-05:00A look back at 2016I promised a review of 2016 since I did virtually no blogging last year. It was a good sewing year, though. I worked solely at <a href="http://www.joann.com/" target="_blank">Jo-Ann Fabrics</a> through the first half of the year, and from July through December worked a temp job at the <a href="http://www.udel.edu/" target="_blank">University of Delaware</a> while still doing a little bit at Jo-Ann on Saturdays. Since that ended I'm back at Jo-Ann's until the next office job comes along!<br />
<br />
I joined the Ladybugs Quilt Guild when I returned to Delaware, and took advantage of my retail work schedule to participate in a few workshops with speakers last winter/spring. I made a top out of silks with <a href="http://cheryllynchquilts.blogspot.com/p/curvalicious.html" target="_blank">Cheryl Lynch</a> and her Curvalicious ruler. I have a huge box of silks from a friend of my mother's which I've been thinking about using in quilting, but didn't know how, so the workshop was a great learning experience!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_kwgKdZG1EZN-RA-0wEvof4NKkPGtxf3T9Wbt0lvSLIHJvzuwapc2yWo1Yd7Sn4cL0WZBMZMnhZrN2kzN1tb3WhiwDbbZTVK2wfXW_Tv7HV69vs-L-Y-cn7h6aCsh7DD3Wae9e4UFYAeg/s1600/Curvalicious.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_kwgKdZG1EZN-RA-0wEvof4NKkPGtxf3T9Wbt0lvSLIHJvzuwapc2yWo1Yd7Sn4cL0WZBMZMnhZrN2kzN1tb3WhiwDbbZTVK2wfXW_Tv7HV69vs-L-Y-cn7h6aCsh7DD3Wae9e4UFYAeg/s320/Curvalicious.jpg" width="118" /></a></div>
The silks shimmer so nicely with the light. I have yet to quilt this one but hope to finish it this year.<br />
<br />
The next workshop I took was with <a href="http://debbykratovilquilts.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Debby Kratovil</a>, learning her ModernVortex quilt. Debby was a designer for a block in Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks <a href="http://tenquilts.blogspot.com/2012/10/its-here-its-here.html" target="_blank">Volume 6 which I'd tested</a> years ago and I'd been one who'd tested her block. I brought my issue of the magazine to the workshop and she signed it for me! :-) #quiltingnerd<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaOQrMSl6UbPUe4NmBXEG0CifOeHLl82xXl6iOjOVWqXv9B_dO4WoBW8Rr7oDCXE93pF19uKtvkLTqtjvTvwOCWE2fRD3t6cz9pB4j_AaWS_QmJGfJsoRqxoaQ6AwE7CmT5oKKQJjfoK9r/s1600/Vortex.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="312" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaOQrMSl6UbPUe4NmBXEG0CifOeHLl82xXl6iOjOVWqXv9B_dO4WoBW8Rr7oDCXE93pF19uKtvkLTqtjvTvwOCWE2fRD3t6cz9pB4j_AaWS_QmJGfJsoRqxoaQ6AwE7CmT5oKKQJjfoK9r/s320/Vortex.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I did my vortex in lime green and navy (although this picture reads more of a dirty yellow). It's another UFO on my to-quilt list.<br />
<br />
In the spring I also worked on a quick wall hanging for my sewing room. I'd decorated in mostly shades of blue and needed something to hang behind the denim sofa. I made this from jelly rolls from one of Kim Brackett's books and had it quilted by Carole of <a href="http://www.quiltsbycarole.com/" target="_blank">Quilts by Carole</a>.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLNbHxRXWtiTACp59L4yrwCKzJDaUMGX_1oal3dP8XYEbJwyjFvZT5UZg38lqxL6qnvkEUugSatoPLp98hAgnY9i7d5xm-3rVXz5Cw8ajQFtxOLt0VkDETNYm1n3rAbzNMkJR3rsT0Gu4v/s1600/Wallhanging.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="317" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLNbHxRXWtiTACp59L4yrwCKzJDaUMGX_1oal3dP8XYEbJwyjFvZT5UZg38lqxL6qnvkEUugSatoPLp98hAgnY9i7d5xm-3rVXz5Cw8ajQFtxOLt0VkDETNYm1n3rAbzNMkJR3rsT0Gu4v/s320/Wallhanging.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
It was a great test run to find a local long-armer I was happy with, and I can definitely recommend Carole to anyone looking for a pantograph long arm quilter in the area.<br />
<br />
I also had Carole finish a top I'd made for my cousin Rhonda. I gave it to her this past May. Purple is her favorite color and it's a pattern from Pat Speth's Nickel Quilts which I made with a bunch of scraps. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqBqIUIcIRE5uESN7Bgz5GwB5YwfDNj-g4MLb7XQI4Ulwzg-THW_8aHXwFfnj5B3fom5G136124hHrrDm8mNjJoKAt098OnJC285Pr3GR99I37Iy2fzI0Rbm25KvUtbHI7up0ximRK4bhc/s1600/Rhonda.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqBqIUIcIRE5uESN7Bgz5GwB5YwfDNj-g4MLb7XQI4Ulwzg-THW_8aHXwFfnj5B3fom5G136124hHrrDm8mNjJoKAt098OnJC285Pr3GR99I37Iy2fzI0Rbm25KvUtbHI7up0ximRK4bhc/s400/Rhonda.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
In June, I finished a quilt in extra-long twin size quilt for my son, who turned 16 while living on campus at the University of Delaware, taking two college courses. He chose the colors and design, and Carole did the quilting again.<br />
<br />
I didn't get as much accomplished in the second half of the year, working two jobs, but I did manage to block test for Quiltmaker Magazine's 100 Blocks, Volume 14. They sent me some gorgeous fabric as a thank you, and it went very nicely with other fabrics in my stash.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In the fall, I also came across the opportunity to buy a used mid-arm machine from a woman who was planning a cross-country move and just didn't want to take it with her. It was still under warranty so I had it serviced before bringing it home and setting it up. Meet my new addition to my line-up of machines, Tinsley the Babylock Tiara:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoiedw0RQak3H9znIBpWi7CRJUFRy7c7SMR2o7R0MC3fFXQNe_060IO0iKtCObiZzegmvyVzgBZMIehyphenhyphenkg8u_KO_531J60_tSDetmhXdC3_LsnKM5_mVRoWfFCZtcayWcmSE4hxtvMW437/s1600/Tinsley.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoiedw0RQak3H9znIBpWi7CRJUFRy7c7SMR2o7R0MC3fFXQNe_060IO0iKtCObiZzegmvyVzgBZMIehyphenhyphenkg8u_KO_531J60_tSDetmhXdC3_LsnKM5_mVRoWfFCZtcayWcmSE4hxtvMW437/s400/Tinsley.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Tinsley joins my other two machines: Baron von Quilthausen, my Bernina 930, and Old Sally, my 1930 Singer. Tinsley came with a stitch regulator and I've been watching a lot of videos to learn how to use her. The first piece I did was a baby quilt for my store manager, who welcomed her daughter Sophia into the world earlier this month. It was a bow tie pattern with charm packs of Bunny Hill Designs' Jubilee.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgI4YRwwKhmO5GorBUjWd9h1Ieaqw0K0gjsVDgWlt0TsLevUZ73b-CZ4kxkIjI8rrkyTDUM7tydD1Dd5WIZkv9U5x8dUyNTF51toykX7tDIeauAW5NNm0eD8xMpqOHwA_xGKFRuaZtkQFbw/s1600/Zasha3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgI4YRwwKhmO5GorBUjWd9h1Ieaqw0K0gjsVDgWlt0TsLevUZ73b-CZ4kxkIjI8rrkyTDUM7tydD1Dd5WIZkv9U5x8dUyNTF51toykX7tDIeauAW5NNm0eD8xMpqOHwA_xGKFRuaZtkQFbw/s400/Zasha3.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
I used rulers to do most of the lines in the bow ties and free motioned the motifs in the white areas.<br />
<br />
The mom-to-be loved the quilt and hopefully the baby will love it too as she grows up.<br />
<br />
That's about all that I managed to accomplish in 2016. I'm looking forward to quilting some of these small pieces on Tinsley this year as well as working more from stash and scraps!Kristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04581476970515697880noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4652438576132828848.post-49248907569410972892017-01-24T12:34:00.002-05:002017-01-24T12:34:27.342-05:00New Year, New ResolutionsHello audience, this is your long-lost author. Well, maybe not many of you are around anymore. Those who still have me in your feed readers might be surprised to see this post pop up. I've let my blogging fall by the wayside for a number of reasons ... 1) other social media, like Instagram, gets my posts out there more quickly and with fewer words (and less effort!), 2) a lot of my sewing lately has been block testing for Quiltmaker Magazine's 100 Blocks issues, which is confidential until the issue is published, and 3) just life! Working one or two jobs while still jobhunting full time and dealing with family obligations takes enough time away from sewing, let alone blogging about sewing!<br />
<br />
So my new year's resolutions for 2017:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHd732CN43mHAhd9Fg8rNf4mbzYt50b7ZIjQt5jHOSeiyYSLavQlxz5gHlwph8wZsNwijyk98q8ZOztsSyR4bsKyL7RR7xoieWMpT8VrofpgRCERMzPhz-sMpdUbPLG3jhMZdvYd42mvxm/s1600/Scraps.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="176" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHd732CN43mHAhd9Fg8rNf4mbzYt50b7ZIjQt5jHOSeiyYSLavQlxz5gHlwph8wZsNwijyk98q8ZOztsSyR4bsKyL7RR7xoieWMpT8VrofpgRCERMzPhz-sMpdUbPLG3jhMZdvYd42mvxm/s400/Scraps.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Taming my scraps is first up on my list. I've been quilting for 25 years now and in the beginning I saved every little bit of every little fabric. In sorting through these bits and pieces I've found scraps from my very first projects. I'm tossing anything I'm not sure is 100% quilting cotton and anything too small to use (and it's got to be pretty small to be too small!). I'm trying to use much of the rest. I'm also donating some older fabrics I'll just never use. My husband thinks it's a sign of the end of the world, but the truth is I am running out of room to add to my stash!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjynhtUSuCZvNShInwy_QJUQt4IN10iRRkr31cjNQXn3RE_iFHluP-IxJf6iQZflrnNewnSBN0duXVhScNZhr4P666yamghdgcamnRgFIz24BB1PLoZNVp_7JRLb5WGMoXpxtFZqzLx6LUF/s1600/UFOs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjynhtUSuCZvNShInwy_QJUQt4IN10iRRkr31cjNQXn3RE_iFHluP-IxJf6iQZflrnNewnSBN0duXVhScNZhr4P666yamghdgcamnRgFIz24BB1PLoZNVp_7JRLb5WGMoXpxtFZqzLx6LUF/s400/UFOs.jpg" width="342" /></a></div>
I keep a running list of UFOs I'd like to finish and I really want some of these off my shelf. There are a few I've just lost interest in and I should really donate. There are a number of smaller tops I need to quilt as well. So getting some of these from unfinished to finished is on my list this year.<br />
<br />
Finally, the third resolution:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh13DVTdsxKqGTQ0rsnWc4e9QSPyY4ev6VMKvFzfOiz8HaJBcxoIsVG2Z3p4dD1dvTBxBdHZfZkmbwTCh-3RpnI5fpbl9LaUNX6DYNKmU86SDbyk_QXDSoNVlcXHegIEUSdEiTxaTCNxZ9/s1600/SocialMedia.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh13DVTdsxKqGTQ0rsnWc4e9QSPyY4ev6VMKvFzfOiz8HaJBcxoIsVG2Z3p4dD1dvTBxBdHZfZkmbwTCh-3RpnI5fpbl9LaUNX6DYNKmU86SDbyk_QXDSoNVlcXHegIEUSdEiTxaTCNxZ9/s200/SocialMedia.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
I've added my Instagram feed to the right; feel free to follow me there. But I hope to post to both sites with quilting content much more regularly. Encouragement helps here so please feel free to comment as moved!<br />
<br />
I owe you a look back at the past year so I will do that in my next post; stay tuned.Kristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04581476970515697880noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4652438576132828848.post-9438315656159685592016-02-08T12:52:00.002-05:002016-02-08T12:52:31.681-05:00Get back into the swingOur move is complete and we're getting settled and have successfully navigated a holiday season. My husband is in training for a major career change, which fortunately draws a salary. I'm still searching for a full-time job but am enjoying working part-time at the local Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts store. Let's face it - cutting fabric all day and discussing sewing projects is not really work!<br />
<br />
My first chore was tackling the redesign of some broken, bare-bones muslin Roman shades from Ikea for the guest room (three of them) and my sewing area (two). The guest room shades were a challenge because I went to Jo-Ann stores in three states before finding enough fabric to finish them, but here they are:<br />
<br />
And here is a shot of the sewing room area, where I coordinated the fabric with the valances I'd made ages ago with a yellow and blue floral print:<br />
<br />
I've yet to find a local longarm quilter to bring my tops to complete, but I've also resolved to add to the pile of finished tops from started projects. The first one to be completed was the cover quilt from Pat Speth's "Nickel Quilts" - I added a checkerboard border of 1" finished squares, which, I'm proud to say, turned out perfectly.<br />
Finally, with a bit of my paycheck money, I treated myself to <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OKZ0646/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?ie=UTF8&btkr=1" target="_blank">Katja Marek's "The New Hexagon: 52 Blocks to English Paper Piece"</a> and started playing around with her fun little patterns during Winter Storm Jonas (or whatever it was called). I have a project in mind for these that I haven't shared with ANYONE yet, so stay tuned. These are addictive!<br />
<br />
Next up, finishing another top, and then beginning to piece a large Windows Into My World Pattern from Geta Grama (her Etsy shop link for this is <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/188550310/modern-wall-hanging-quilt-pattern?ref=shop_home_active_14" target="_blank">here</a>, with her own picture below). It's easier than it looks! I have yet to buy the fabric for it so I'm occupying myself with hexies instead.<br />
More to come in time. On deck - celebrating National Sewing Day with my new guild, and hopefully hearing whether I'll be fortunate enough to be a block tester for another issue of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks.Kristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04581476970515697880noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4652438576132828848.post-13238183718103240632015-11-08T14:24:00.003-05:002017-01-24T12:43:31.167-05:00Change, soon?It's been nearly a year since my last post and that's in part because I've had nothing to say. I've had all my fabric, quilts and other sewing stuff in storage for about 15 months. Within the next few days we'll be moving, finally, to a new state, and the movers will deliver it all. It's exciting because I will finally be able to regain some sanity with setting up a sewing room again, joining a new guild again, and having the peace that being surrounded by my stuff brings me. But it's frightening because this move is a risk; we still don't have jobs, and we have the banged-up egos that being unemployed for over a year tends to give people. But I guess this is a little like the orchestra playing as the Titanic went down ... it let the doomed focus on something slightly more pleasant than their impending demise. So maybe I will be sewing and even posting again before the year is up.Kristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04581476970515697880noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4652438576132828848.post-19605832190503907802014-12-03T17:52:00.000-05:002014-12-03T17:52:16.184-05:00nothing happeningI'm still kicking, but that's about all I have to say. We were fortunate to sell our house less than a week after listing it for sale this past summer, but that's where our good luck pretty much ended. We sold about a third of what we own, put most of the rest in storage, and moved just clothes, food and bare necessities into my dad's house at the end of the summer. "Bare necessities" includes toiletries, computers, financial documents, and, for me, one sewing machine, a basket of notions, two WIPs and some fabric scraps.<br />
<br />
The rest of my sewing room - fabric, books, notions, and every quilt I own - is in a storage unit in North Carolina somewhere, along with all our Christmas decorations, furniture, personal memorabilia, kitchenware, family photos, etc., etc. I'm far more fortunate than the refugees I see in the middle east fleeing their homelands for safety with only the clothes on their backs, but I do worry that I'll never see my belongings again.<br />
<br />
Neither of us has had much luck finding work in the almost seven months since my husband was let go, despite job searching being our full-time jobs during these past three months since the move. We are grateful to have a free roof over our heads but the stress is leaving us struggling to find hope - rather than fear - in what might come next. I have little momentum and space to sew, so if life doesn't change for us soon, this blog will probably end up being pretty pointless to maintain.Kristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04581476970515697880noreply@blogger.com1
